Scared To Go Out
- Nishnawbe Aski Nation, 2005 -
There was a boy at residential school who sexually molested several of the girls. He would hang around outside the school and when a girl came outside by herself and no one else was around, he would run up to the girl and drag her into the bush and try to rape her. Sometimes he succeeded. All the girls knew this boy and knew that he had raped some of the girls, so the girls were careful not to be outside by themselves. One time when I was outside, I was thinking about something and forgot all about the boy and being alone outside. I heard a noise and looked up to see the boy running across the playground towards me. I thought, “oh no, he is coming after me”. When the boy got up near me he stopped running and stood there in front of me grinning. I did not know what to do so I quickly kicked him in the crotch. The boy let out a screech and bent over. I must have hurt him. Fortunately for me, a bunch of other girls came out into the playground at that time and they came over to me. The boy ran away. After that I was sacred to go outside by myself.
